DWARF MAGNOLIA
Native to Georgia
Family: magnoliaceae
Magnolias are one of the world's oldest flowering plant species, evolving before bees existed and relying on beetles for pollination. Several dwarf magnolia varieties offer beautiful blooms and manageable sizes for smaller gardens. Some popular options include the Little Gem magnolia, Royal Star magnolia, and Teddy Bear magnolia.

Dwarf magnolia varieties, like the 'Little Gem', 'Teddy Bear', and 'Southern Charm', are cultivars of the Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) that have been selectively bred for smaller size and more compact growth. These dwarf varieties are popular choices for landscaping due to their ability to retain the classic beauty of the Southern Magnolia in smaller spaces.
The "Little Gem" cultivar, for example, was discovered and developed in 1952 and released to the public in 1966.
Popular Dwarf Magnolia Varieties:
“Little Gem”: An evergreen variety known for its compact size, large white fragrant flowers, and glossy green leaves with rusty-brown undersides.
“Southern Charm”: Another evergreen variety with smaller leaves and flowers than the species, but still retains the beautiful fragrance and glossy foliage.
“Teddy Bear”: A compact, evergreen magnolia with large, fragrant flowers and a dense growth habit.
“Fairy Blush”: A dwarf magnolia variety that is also suitable for container gardening.
The large white fragrant pure white flowers are the most recognizable trait. They are abundant blooming which creates beauty from early April to late October.

Leaf Size: 4-8 inches long, or 4-6 inches long.
Description: Alternate, simple, evergreen, elliptic leaves. They are dark green on top with a lighter green-brown, often fuzzy, underside.
Important Note: Even though some varieties like 'Little Gem' are classified as dwarf, they can still reach heights of 20 to 25 feet at maturity. The term "dwarf" in this context refers to a smaller size compared to traditional Southern Magnolias, which can grow to over 60 feet tall and 40 feet wide.
